The TING / MoMA STORE DESIGN
The TING (Pavilion) is designed for the MoMA design store.
It is a modular retail system, which the shop is divided into several small Pavilions. The pavilions are installed with wheels in order to rearrange and redesign the store, due to the change of displayed items. The pavilions are inspired by Tingzi from traditional Asian gardens, which are small, open architecture for people to stay and rest. The whole design invokes a sense of Asian gardening, mingle with the contemporary design of items.
The installation of Light adds more dynamic to the space. Since the linen fabric creates a soft, gentle effect bounding by light, the lighting effect mimics lanterns.
It transforms the store into a group of lanterns, creates a dream light, poetic atmosphere.
Most modern retail design experiences derive form western design. The evolution of modern design theory is grounded with western aesthetics, girded and unified with western philosophy. By driven from a eastern cultured theme, the design idea is trying to modernize the historical elements, merge it with contemporary design goods and make it universal. The universal design should not be excluded to the western culture, and should be driven from different background and anesthetics. Most modern retail design experiences derive form western design.
